September Music Room News
September is an exciting time of the year in the JME music room. Kindergarten students are preparing their "sounds" for their program on Friday, September 27, 2013 in the gymnasium at 1pm. The children were given a letter filled with program information on Monday. It will be an event that you do not want to miss.
Third grade students are busy preparing "Interplanetary Jammin'" for your listening pleasure. They will perform on Friday, October 25th at 1pm. This performance promises to be out of this world. We have lots of tricks up our sleeves for this one!
4th and 5th grade chorus will meet for their first classes on Friday afternoon. We are so excited to finally get started making beautiful harmonies together. We look forward to performing for you this winter.
Everyone else is busy learning alot about rhythm and melody. 4th and 5th grade students should be studying their Frederick Delius study guides. Until next time, try to stay cool, dry, and listen to music every day!

Welcome to the JME music room - where stars are born!
The JME music room is the place to be during the 2013-2014 school year! The happy sounds of rhythm, harmony, and melody will be "skyrocking" out of every crack from the music room into the main hallway and on to "infinity and beyond"(as Buzz Lightyear would say). My wish is for every student to be busting at the seams to share what they did in music with every family member every week. Please find out what day your child comes to music and get into the habit of asking them what we did that day. Each grade level will have a music program during the school year, but our main focus will be on building basic music skills at each grade level. We always build on skills learned in previous years. Rhythm and melody are important parts of our everyday lives down to our breathing and heartbeats. Kindergarten students will have the first program of the school year. They will present "Sounds We Found" for your entertainment on Friday, September, 27th at 1:00p.m. Parents will receive more information later in the month. Fifth grade students play the soprano recorder as part of their music curriculum. It is important for each child to have his/her own instrument for sanitary and practice reasons. If you have not ordered your child's instrument, please contact me as soon as possible. They will start recorder the first day of music. Information about the JME chorus and other grade level programs will be forthcoming! Please feel free to contact me at any time at 368-3114 or lpoppell@liberty.k12.ga.us. I am looking forward to a great year with your children! KEEP LISTENING!

Music Room Notes
There is so much music making going on in the JME music room that you could possibly get dizzy! This Friday, our Kindergarten students will be stunning their audience with "Amazin' Shapes" at 1:00pm in the JME gymnasium. Who would have thought that learning about shapes could be so much fun! Kindergarten has some great dancers, so our 4th graders better watch out!
The next musical performance is scheduled for Friday, October 19th at 1:00pm. Our 2nd grade students will be presenting "Get Up and Move." We are having a great time practicing for this program, but I sure am getting my exercise! I hope that the JME 2nd graders can keep up with me! Please encourage them to bring their music home and practice.
A special thank you to my chorus parents for getting the singers to school early on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Please remember that they need to eat breakfast at home on chorus days. We are already working on music for our Christmas concert.
1st graders will begin working on their Christmas musical next week, so get ready for them to start squeaking with enthusiasm! They will have lots of musical goodies to share!
4th and 5th grade students are studying the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. They will be listening to The Magic Flute next week, so please ask them about a special homework assignment. This is a listening lesson, so they should be able to explain exactly what the assignment is. Just a heads up - I am encouraging them to use any recycled materials that they can find. I want them to step out of the pencil and paper box! I am excited about where their imaginations will take them!
Keep music in your lives until next time!

Music Happenings
The musical year is off to a great start at JME! 5th graders have received their recorders and are busy learning BAG. Don't worry parents - the shrill sounds will quickly change to beautiful melodies! It is not too late for those students who haven't purchased their recorders to do so this week. 4th graders are busy reviewing the treble clef while 3rd graders are experimenting with ostinatos. 3rd graders are also relating the characters in "Charlotte's Web" to themselves through the song "We've Got Lots in Common." 2nd graders are busy with strong and weak beats while 1st graders are sorting syllables into beats while distinguishing between rhymes and songs. 1st graders are also determining whether two 4-beat rhythm patterns are the same or different. Kindergarten students began learning the title song from their musical, "Amazin' Shapes," which will be presented at 1:00 on Friday, September 28th.
4th and 4th grade students will have the opportunity to sign up to audition for the JME Chorus next week. There will be a sign-up sheet in each classroom. Students will sing "America" ("My Country 'Tis of Thee") for the audition. If they are chosen, a letter will come home for parents to sign. Chorus meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:20 - 7:45. I am looking forward to having a great group of young singers!
Until next time -
Musically,
Lynn Poppell
